Basement flooding is typically caused by heavy rains, melting snow or damaged pipes. But the most damaging and annoying reason for basement flooding is sewer backup. This happens when sewage from sewer lines, for some reason, can’t flow naturally into the sewer and begin to flow back or back up into your house. Sewer water is dirty, foul-smelling and teeming with all sorts of harmful microorganisms. Sewer backups will not only damage your property but also put to risk your health and your family’s safety.

Backwater valves play a crucial role in protecting your basement from flooding. The valve blocks incoming water from coming back up your sewer lines.

Benefits of Sewer Backwater Valve Installation

A backwater valve prevents basement flooding by blocking sewage from flowing back into your home during heavy rain. This is essential in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Markham & the GTA, where unpredictable weather can cause serious flooding.

• Flood Protection

It lowers the risk of basement flooding by blocking sewer backups.

• Money Savings

Stops costly water damage repairs and can lower insurance premiums.

• Home Safety

Makes your home safer by cutting down on the risk of sewage contamination.

• Peace of Mind

Gives you confidence that your home is safe during heavy storms and sudden downpours.

Adding a backwater valve with other waterproofing methods ensures better flood prevention.

Steps to Install a Backwater Valve

The installation of a backwater valve involves several steps:

1
Assessment
Look at your plumbing system to find the best spot for the valve.
2
Planning
Get the necessary permits from the City of Toronto and prepare the installation plan.
3
Excavation
Dig out the area where the valve will go.
4
Installation
Put the valve in, making sure it fits well in the sewer line.
5
Testing
Check the system to make sure the valve works properly.

Hiring a licensed plumber in Toronto is crucial to ensure the installation meets local regulations and standards.

Choosing the Right Backwater Valve for Your Home

Several types of backwater valves are available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right valve for your home depends on factors such as the size of your sewer line, the frequency of backups in your area, and your budget.

Types of Backwater Valves

Flap-Type Valves

These are the most common type of backwater valve. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. However, they can be more prone to clogging than other types of valves.

Gate-Type Valves

Gate-type valves offer better protection against backflow than flap-type valves. They are also less likely to clog. However, they are typically more expensive.

Ball-Type Valves

Ball-type valves are known for their reliability and resistance to clogging. They are often used in commercial applications but can also be installed in residential settings.

Frequently Asked Questions:

A backwater valve helps prevent basement flooding by stopping sewage from flowing backward into your home during heavy rain.

Installing a backwater valve provides flood protection, saves money on water damage repairs, reduces the risk of sewage contamination, and offers peace of mind during storms.

Toronto experiences heavy rainfall and has aging sewer systems, making backwater valves essential for protecting homes from frequent flooding.

The process starts with assessing your plumbing system, obtaining necessary permits, planning, excavating, installing the valve, and testing the system.

The installation process varies based on whether the property is residential or commercial, as each has specific flood prevention and sewer system needs.

If you have pre-existing drain pipe problems like tree roots, a collapsed pipe or improper slope…they will need to be fixed before the valve is installed. The valve can only protect you from sewage flooding if your drain system is operational.

Backwater valve installation cost will depend on a few things: access to the basement and main drain lines, if the valve is to be installed inside or outside of the home, and if there are any repairs that need to be done before the valve can be installed.

Yes. Currently, the City of Toronto, City of MArkham and the Region of Peel, offer subsidy/rebate programs to offset the cost of backwater valve installation, sump pump installation and downspout disconnection.

Yes. Please call or email our office and we'll schedule a free consultation and a backwater valve installation estimate.

The first step is to give us a call. One of our flood prevention specialists will give you a call back and answer any questions you might have as well as provide a free consultation on the installation and the rebate process. If you are happy with the consultation, the next step would be scheduling an in-person meeting so that the technician could inspect the property and provide a formal estimate.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY...

Received floor drain and backwater valve and Canadian Rooters did a terrific job. Timely, good communication, high quality work and left the job site cleaner than it was before! Also assisted with the rebate process which was a huge help.

Naz and his team helped us tremendously. First with a fast professional response on a Drain Inspection with their Camera system. As a result of the inspection there were areas of concern. Naz's honest approach recommended that if we planned any basement improvements that we get the house portion replaced and add a backwater valve. We did have improvements that were planned to start in less than 2 weeks. Naz's team organized the replacement of the drain that was supposed to take 2 day. However, his experienced team was able to complete the work in one day! Incredible is all i can say!! Thanks agains to you and your pros Naz!

Canadian Rooter did a fantastic job installing a backwater valve outside and two floor drains inside. They told me how long it would take and when they were coming and they were spot-on. They cleaned up beautifully and were very respectful of our property. A pleasure to work with.

Homeowner

I was very happy with the work performed by Canadian Rooter - very helpful, professional and punctual. I had some water in my basement and not knowing much about how to prevent this in the future, Naz came over and educated me without any pressure or false promises but lots of patience. He explained and did all the paper work on my behalf from securing for a permit from the township to getting the inspector to verify the work they did. (Yes, the inspector passed the work) I had a weeping tile installed in the basement, a sum pump, membrane and a backwater valve. They cemented the concrete post installation. The area covered was pretty big. All this was done in 3 days with as many as 8 to 9 people working at certain times. They cleaned up every evening before leaving and had ensured the area was closed off to minimize the dust and debris from spreading all over. I would highly recommend Canadian Rooter. It was a pleasure and delight to have Canadian Rooter do the job

What my wife and I expected to be a disaster job ended up being one of the most efficient easy and hassle free experiences we have experienced. Our main line pipes were broken causing back up in our basement shower. This required Nazar's crew to dig up our front lawn to fix the problem. They were able to finish the job within 3-4 days only because they had to wait for an inspection. They were super neat and restored my lawn back to the best conditions that could be expected. The job was done well and at the same time a backwater valve was installed so we do not have to worry about floods in the basement. Nazar's team also installed a drain in my basement which could have been an issue if we ever had a flood. I would recommend their team to anyone who requires plumbing work. They were extremely reliable punctual and very pleasant.

I just can't say enough about Naz, Andrew and their team. They did a stellar job in repairing the sanitary and storm drains inside and outside my house as well as installing two backwater valves. Sewer backup is never a pleasant experience at the best of times and especially during this challenging period (coronavirus) when staying at home takes on a whole new meaning. the job required extensive excavation both inside and outside the house. Their work was meticulous and professional, and the cleanup was unbelievable. Again,Naz, Andrew and crew, thank you so very much!

Leo Spindel

Very satisfied with the service provided by Canadian Rooter and the professionalism of Mike and his crew. They installed a backwater valve in the basement utility room. Despite some plumbing anomalies in our home they got the job done and walked me through the installation options to make the best decision. Initially Mike came by to provide a quote and walk me through the project and I was impressed they were able to coordinate and schedule the work to start the next day.

Michelle and Michael

We knew we needed a backwater valve installed and had been putting it off for years. After calling around a number of plumbers I was the most impressed by Canadian Rooter who came out to do a free estimate and were polite and friendly the whole time. The job was completed as promised in good time and they took care of all the city paperwork and inspection to ensure we would get the city rebate for the work. It was all very easy and I would recommend them to anyone.

Jennifer

We had been thinking of having a backwater valve installed, and saw some ads and finally went with Canadian Rooter. Mike came out to explain the process and was very knowledgeable and reassuring. The work was done over Christmas by pleasant workers with very little disruption and the inspector came as scheduled. Mike came to check that we were happy and took the payment along with the completed form for the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program. We have received notice from the city that our application has been received and is being reviewed already.

Anne

I used Canadian Rooter to install a backwater valve. They provided a detailed quote, got the permit and completed the work within three weeks. I am completely satisfied and would recommend Canadian Rooter.

Customer of Canadian Rooter

To help prevent basement flooding, we wanted to add an external backwater valve. The work required Canadian Rooter to dig a 9 ft deep pit in our front yard to reach the existing sanitary pipe, install a new plastic pipe and valve, test the pipe/valve, coordinate with the city inspector to come on-site, then backfill the pit. Canadian Rooter was excellent to deal with -- they showed up on time and completed the work as promised and it easily passed inspection! [Note: I understand they are well known by the city inspectors for their good work] They were reliable, courteous and hard working. A special thanks to Mike who coordinated the job -- he is knowledgeable and was easy to deal with -- he explained everything that needed to be done and ensured the job was done right. Will definitely spread the good word!

Having finally decided to install a backwater valve, we checked out a number of plumbing companies that had worked in our neighborhood. After meeting with Naz, we chose Canadian Rooter. Naz explained exactly what the job entailed, gave us definite timelines, and quoted us an excellent price. Naz organized the whole project from start to finish, including arrangements for the city inspector. Because of this, there was no wasted time and the job was completed very quickly and efficiently. The work crew was punctual, courteous and worked hard. They also did an excellent job cleaning up when they finished. Just last week, I called Naz to ask his advice on another drain issue. He came to the house the very next day, answered all my questions and gave his recommendations. My experience with Canadian Rooter, and Naz in particular, has been that they do excellent work at a fair price and provide exceptional customer service! I can highly recommend Canadian Rooter.

David

I called Canadian Rooter for a quote on a Backwater Valve installation and Mike showed up the next day. He spent about 30 mins looking at the project and gave me a quote that was less than another quote I had received. He spent time explaining the different contingencies that MIGHT have come up that would increase the quote, and left me a written quote. I hired him on the spot. His crew came the next day and dug out the surrounding area to expose the drain/sewer pipes and then told me that the quote would stand, no extras needed. The crew were very careful to keep the area clean and covered. I could not be happier with their work. Really professional company. Mike's a great communicator and a very knowledgeable professional. I would not hesitate to hire Canadian Rooter again. They are in my rolodex under Plumber!

Late on the night of my 80th birthday the downstairs toilet blocked, I partially cleared it at the clean out in the rec.room but needed a plumber.P.P. was recommended by a friend and they arrived within the hour on Sat. morning. With their camera they located a broken pipe under the house footings. The blockage was cleared and their crew arrived on Monday morning as promised.Repairs were made and a backflow valve installed. They did an excellent job of cementing and cleaning up. I would highly recommend your company.

Richard Yorke

This firm did an excellent job installing a back flow valve and new copper water feed. The job was started and completed several days after I gave the go ahead. Every effort was made to minimize mess and clean-up was exemplary. My only complaint would be some minor interior wall access damage was not repaired and there has been some sinkage where the hole was filled in. But all in all, a good job.
